The Iron Tamper: The Versatility of Juniper Berries and Blood Orange Soda

Well, my first Iron Tamper Competition was as fun! There was a smaller crowd this time around (due to the fact the amazing ice cream store next door, Jenni’s, wasn’t opening on the same night) and nearly all of us knew each other. I’m always pleased to find myself in the midst of such a unique community. Nashville’s baristas are passionate, nerdy, smart and, to no surprise, into great music. There were a total of eight competitors, three judges and one Jason Dominy of Batdorf & Bronson Coffee heading it all up. What a guy!

The secret ingredients were intriguing and definitely unique. We had pumpkin butter, juniper berries and blood orange soda. All yum! We were all drawn to the juniper berries. Maybe that’s because we wanted our coffee to taste like gin.

The winners, Heath Henley and Lauren Bing, used the blood orange soda as the base of their drink. They added espresso, crushed juniper berries and a date syrup. It was delicious and sweet. They won the pot of cash.

The runners up, Jackson O’Brien and Archie Woods, won a pound of Batdorf & Bronson Coffee and an Ugly Mugs t-shirt.

The competition was relaxed and creative leading to an enjoyable evening. I for one am happy Nashville has these events for baristas to get together, geek out and ultimately give the city even better coffee. Let’s keep ’em comin!
